INTERVIEW WITH TWO STUDENTS WHO ARE AFFECTED BY ODL
On December 21, the Canopus group interviewed two students who were impressed with the odl. A student from UNIMAS is Adam Hariz. Adam is a final year student in faculty of Applied and Creative Arts. The second student is a SPM student in 2020 who was postponed to 2021, namely Hajaj Naim. Hajaj is a student majoring in humanities who takes accounting subjects. we use the zoom platform to do this interview because of the constraints of group members and interview guests living in different states and because the Covid-19 pandemic is not over. We also asked six questions to the interview guests chaired by our group leader, Syahira Ariffaisel. The question we gave to Adam and Hajaj was about ODL. Click this link to watch the video:
Below are the questions we gave them along with their answers.
Question 1: In your opinion, what benefits do you get from
online learning?
1) Adam said the benefit of studying online is that he
can attend 2 meetings at a time. For example, he has a position at his
university and he needs to attend both ade meetings. So, he used 2 gadgets to
enter both meetings made. In addition, Adam also said that when it comes to
online learning, we no longer have to chase to enter the classroom. If you want
to compare with the previous time, we as students have to walk to class 30
minutes earlier or 15 minutes earlier. So, at the moment it is no longer
necessary because you just have to sit down and press the link given by our
lecturer.
2) Meanwhile, in the opinion of Hajaj, the good thing he
got was that online learning is more comfortable than studying at school. This
is said to be so because if at school we have distractions like our peers
bother us to focus in the classroom. Also, when we study at home we can study
on the bed or at the study desk available and this makes students more
comfortable to study. In the student house also has air conditioning and during
the class the students are no longer hot and there is no reason not to focus in
this virtual classroom. Hajaj also think, we can take care of the SOP when we
study at home.
Question 2: In your opinion, what are the challenges you
experience while studying online?
Answer:
1)Adam has given his opinion that the challenge
he is going through is unstable and slow internet access during class
broadcasts. This is said to be because Adam has a problem with
unstable internet access that interferes with his learning sessions. In
addition, Adam had to go out of the house to find a stable internet
access such as in Mamak shops, "McDonals", Cyber Cafes and so on.
Although it is difficult to find a stable and fast internet access, he remains
enthusiastic and diligent in attending classes online. As the saying goes,
"I want a thousand powers, I don't want a thousand excuses". Apart
from that, Adam also said that he had difficulty completing the
assignment given based on practical work because he was an art student, so the
need for practical work assignments was available at the university only.
Therefore, Adam had to find the need for his own assignment to
complete the work given by the lecturer.
2) Hajaj's opinion related to the challenge of
learning online is that he has a hard time understanding online learning. This
is said because he said that it is difficult to ask questions where Hajaj is a form 5 student and will sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)
examination and he feels that if there are questions that he does not
understand, he has to meet online with friends -his friend to discuss a
question he did not understand earlier. Hajaj also said it is easier to
learn face to face but due to this Covid-19 pandemic has prevented face-to-face
learning between students and teachers. In addition, Hajaj also
suffered from unstable internet disruption, making it difficult for him to
follow live class broadcasts. He had to go out looking for a stable internet
access to continue learning online. Therefore, Adam should be
determined to find a solution to the problem he is experiencing so that he will
get excellent results and be proud of his parents.
Question 3: What do you do if you start to stress while
studying online?
Answer;
Adam said he did not have much stress while studying
because he only followed what the instructor had told him. But logically,
everyone will definitely feel stressed while studying. Everyone has their own
way, how to deal with the problem. Due to the current era which is full of
advanced technology with various gadgets available, he can overcome stress by
playing games with his friends, surfing social media and so on. So, when he no
longer feels stress, he can continue to complete assignments and so on. So in
conclusion, he will surf social media and play games when he starts to feel
stressed while studying online.
We did not get an answer from Hajaj because Hajaj was
disconnected when the question was asked.
Question 4: How do you understand the
lesson?
Answer:
1) As Adam has said, he says that most of his
learning assessments are more to the work. But given the inevitable Covid-19
pandemic and most other students and Adam had to study online
face-to-face with lecturers through this Zoom and Google Meet app, his
lecturers only focused on computer assignments and analysis. Therefore, this
assignment will further facilitate the assignment given by the lecturer because
in this way, students do not have to go off campus to find materials related to
the work and there are also many resources related to his studies that can be
found at internet. According to him, if you do not understand a lesson, you can
refer to a classmate or if you still do not understand, you can ask the
lecturer who teaches the lesson. In this way, it is the most effective way for
Adam if he can not understand the lesson.
2) According to Hajaj, he
said that if he did not understand the lesson, then he would make more tranning
available on the internet. Apart from that, Hajaj also has the same opinion and way as brother Adam that he
will also ask other classmates who better understand the lesson.
Question 5: How do you divide your time while studying
online at home compared to your respective institutions?
Answer;
As Adam has said, studying online at home is more
beneficial and easier than face-to-face at university. This is said to be so
because studying online at home allows him to enter two classes at the same
time using different devices such as phones and laptops. If at university and
studying face to face causes him to have to be on time to attend classes
according to a set schedule and if he has other programs need to be attended at
the same time, he has to choose the one he wants to attend. It can be concluded
here that for Adam learning online is easier and more pleasant for him to be
happy with the time and assignments and classes that he needs to complete and
attend.
This question also, we did not get an answer from Hajaj because Hajaj was disconnected when the question was asked.
Question 6: What is your alternative if there is no internet line
signal in your area?
Answer:
1)How Adam overcame the problem of interference or lack
of internet is that he is willing to go out to the town or to a road junction
not far from just one kilometer to get an internet network to upload videos of
assignments and answer quizzes and assignments. Eventually he will find
alternative ways to gain internet access.
2)Similarly with Hajaj he will go out of the house to
find internet access either at the cyber center or restaurant for school work
or tests conducted by the school.
